Historical and Spiritual Heritage of Liska

 


Dating back to the 1800s, Liska became a well-known center for Jewish religious and cultural life. Hershele Lisker, or Tzvi Hirsh Liska, draws thousands to Liska, inspiring pilgrimage each year. Liska is home to over 500 Jewish heritage sites, from cemeteries to synagogues reflecting a long history. By the late 1800s, Liska had a largely Jewish population, with around 3,000 residents contributing to its vibrant life. Liska’s influence extends beyond its borders, reaching nearby towns like Kerestir and impacting Jewish life across Hungary. Today, Liska attracts around 5,000 visitors annually, each drawn by its historical and spiritual significance.
